Review: Project A (A計劃) (1983)

Oh yeah, this was hype. I think this movie was great in the creativity of its action scenes, that included both interation among the characters, as well as interaction with the settings and surroundings. The story was simple and not too complicated. I would recommend this as a fun action movie.

Spoilers.

Story

This was a simple story. Ma Yu-long was part of the marine police. The marine police and the police force were at odds. Hong Tin-chi was part of the police force, and the nephew of a high ranking officer. So naturally, there was enmity between the two. At one point the police force absorbed the marine police, much to the disappointment of the marine police.

There were talks of pirates around Hong Kong, and the pirates were in a deal with the gangsters to get guns. Long and Tin-chi went to a club to try to catch a gangster. A fight broke out and Long was blamed for all of it. Frustrated, Long quit the police force.

Cheuk Yat-fei was a guy who was up to fishy business. He and Long had a history and weren't on the best terms. Fei was trying to help broker the guns deal. Upon Long finding out about it, he thwarted Fei's attempt.

It was revealed that the guns were coming from the police. Since the pirates didn't get a hold of the guns, they took a ship hostage. Long, Fei, and Tin-chi, with the help of many officers, took down the pirates.

As you can probably tell, I didn't pay too close attention to the story. But it didn't need to be too complicated. The entire movie was an excuse to see cool action and I'm cool with that.

Production

The action was pretty hype. I believe the action director here was Sammo Hung and I am a big fan of his action. I think what stood out in this movie was that a lot of scenes had large amounts of stuntment on scene at all times. One of the first fight scenes we saw was the fight scene between the marine police and the police force, and seeing how it was all coordinated was really fun. The movie continued to have scenes with lots of stuntment, like the scene at the hotel, when Long was running away from the police, and when the guys were fighting the pirates.

Another thing that HK action does well is making use of the setting. So while there was hand-to-hand combat, there was also a lot of setting-specific fights, like using furniture or the space or shape of a building to design fights.

The rhythm of the fights was really fast, and really fun to follow along.

Characters

Ma Yu-long

The main character, played by Jackie Chan. My problem with Jackie Chan is that in a lot of movies where he plays the lead, he's often an overly idealistic and justice-obsessed cop, who's fine with destroying everything for a principle. And while that is a valid character type, it also gets a little eye-rolly. In this movie, Long was still intent on serving justice, but he was a little more realistic. He wasn't so rigid. Instead, we saw that he had friends, he was aware that he was doing damage when fighting, even if for a cause he deemed reasonable.

He disapproved of the guns falling into the hands of the pirates. In general, he was also very proud to be a marine police officer, standing up to the officer who had dissolved the marine police because he believed in their cause.

Cheuk Yat-fei

Played by Sammo Hung, Fei was a guy who just did odd jobs, mostly semi-illegal. He was introduced to us at a mahjong parlour, hustling hard to get the win.

Fei appeared to have a history with Long. Despite their different paths, they seemed to still be on good terms. Fei was concerned with earning a living, but he roped Long in when he figured that Long would care about delivering justice.

Fei was upset when Long had hidden the guns because Fei was going to broker the deal. But eventually, Fei and Long reconciled, and they worked together to save the hostages from the pirates.

Hong Tin-chi

Tin-chi was a nephew of a high ranking police officer. At first he was at odds with Long, but later on, he understood that the marine police were being given the short end of the stick. He eventually helped Long and Fei save the hostages and blow up the pirate ship.

Overall

A fun movie, would recommend it for some great exciting classic action.
