Cool Stuff I Saw: February 2021
Hi people. Hope you're all doing well. Here is this month's edition of cool stuff I saw.
Current events
- I had this thread saved up before Canada declared sanctions against China for its treatment of Uyghurs in Xinjiang. Frankly I don't know what's true. This thread tried to prove that a lot of reporting is false. I do believe that a lot of Western media is biased and sensationalized. At the same time, I'm not sure how much Chinese nationals know much about what's going on in the region either. (Link)
Life
- I read a comment on Reddit from a former pet story employee with notes on how to prepare oneself before adopting a pet. I wrote a post about it on my Tumblr, but my biggest takeaway was the advice not to anthropomorphize your pets. They might never love you in the way that you love them, and that was something that I realized I would need to accept before adopting a pet. (Reddit comment) (My Tumblr post)
Korean history
- I read a fic set in historical Korea so I looked up quite a few things that were mentioned. (Hwarang) (Namsadang) (Crown Prince Sado)
Video Games
- I was looking up an old Deviantart account that I was a huge fan of. My favourite art of theirs was their Pokemon OC fanart. They don't use their Deviantart account anymore and I don't know where to find them now unfortunately. (Link)
Sports
- Steve Dangle Podcast is now under SDPN. They have merch for sale now, but I wonder what other projects they're planning on making now that SDPN is a "brand." (Link)
Fashion
- I recently learned about the Kibbe body type system. (Link)
- Here's a scale that I think makes the Kibbe system a bit easier to understand. (Link)
- And here is a link what what clothes are recommended for each body type. (Link)
Personality
- I learned about Enneagram tritypes, which is a different way to interpret the Enneagram circle. (Link)
Chinese entertainment
- My parents and I were watching TV while eating dinner, and a very old black and white Cantonese movie was playing. It was the Thunderstorm (雷雨). It was supposedly very popular in its day. In the modern day, it's probably famous becaus Bruce Lee played a supporting role (before he'd gone to the States). Even though he only played a supporting character, he's listed first in the Wikipedia page because he's most recognizable to Western audiences. Anyway, my mom explained the plot to me, and it seemed to be a typical "family drama" sort of story. (Link)
- I stumbled upon an interesting article but I can't access it. It's about themes of incest in Chinese BL fiction. Incest is definitely a theme that is more taboo in Western fandom than in Chinese fandom, and I'd love to read more about it. (Link)
- A Tumblr thread about the cultural differences between Western LGBT and Asian LGBT communities. The thread wanted to emphasize the significance of cultural identity compared to LGBT identity. (Link)
- I was just looking up old songs from the Hong Kong movie series Young and Dangerous 古惑仔. (陳小春 - 乱世巨星) (鄭伊健 - 友情歲月)
- The Hong Kong singer Leo Ku 古巨基 had a series of medley songs that included snippets of popular Chinese songs (both in Cantonese in Mandarin). (Link)
- A-Mei, the singer, had a famous song. I was thinking about it recently. (張惠妹 - 聽海)
- I was watching Who's the Murderer, specifically a case in which all of the characters were dressed up as Journey to the West characters. Two of the guys broke out in a rendition of Only You with the lyrics changed, which is directly from Stephen Chow's Journey to the West movie where Tang Zeng sings Only You to try to convince who he believes is Sun Wukong to come with him on his journey XD Truly a classic. (Link)
- I was trying to look up Fanxing fanvideos on Bilibili. In particular, I was looking for the sorts of fanvideos that are edited together like fanfics. I was hoping to find at least some, especially because they each have been in quite a few movies/TV shows to amass a good amount of shots in a wide range of costumes in situations. But there weren't too many, mostly likely because this is a dead ship :( (Link 1) (Link 2) (Link 3) (Link 4) (Link 5)
- Some KrisTao fanart! (Link 1) (Link 2) (Link 3)
Korean entertainment
- A Twitter thread highlighting the size differences of Suho and Chanyeol's hands lol. (Link)
- Xiumin was doing some choreography for Ka-Ching and Suho was in the background dancing along. It was sooo cute T_T (Link)
- I saw a clip of Suho's acting and singing in the Korean version of the musical The Man Who Laughs. It was pretty good. What I liked about it was that Suho was not afraid of pulling weird faces to express the character properly. One of the main criticisms of idol actors is that they're afraid of looking weird or ugly, but I don't think that bothers Suho. He's always been the kind of guy who matches the mood of the room, and it's great to see him fitting in well in a musical. (Link)
- Just a cute video of Sehun packing up on one of his live stream sessions ^^;; (Link)
- Exo's favourite animals. Only 8-member Exo though :( (Link)
- Another picture to show the size difference between Suho and his members. (Comparison to Chanyeol) (Comparison to Sehun)
- An ask/fic about a shy boy who looks up to a blogger who posts cute and kinky pictures of himself. The shy boy may be implied to be Suho? :( (Link
- A Twitter thread for an Exo mermaid AU. (Link)
- Some cute Seho :3 (I also saw a cute gif of them holding hands at the deer farm in Exo's Ladder 2 but the tweet got removed ^^;;) (Link 1) (Link 2) (Link 3) (Link 4) (Link 5) (Link 6) (Link 7) (Link 8)
- Chanyeol, Sehun, and Junmyeon sleeping in a room and singing lullabies lol. (Link)
- Suyeol in Touch It performances. (Link)
- I found some really nice Suho fanart! (Link)
