Cool Stuff I Saw - May 31, 2020
Here's the May 2020 edition of cool stuff I saw :3
Life
- I saw this article with suggestions for high intensity interval workouts. (Link)
- I learned about this term called "Parasocial interaction." It's used to describe the one-way relationships between celebrities and fans. Fans consume the content put out by celebrities but they don't have the same ability to communicate with the celebrities. I haven't read the entire Wikipedia article but the concept is fascinating. I think it probably became a bigger phenomenon when celebrity photography became a thing. (Link)
- Okay, this one takes a bit of explaining. I'm not in Kpop fandom, but every once in a while, I'll go on a short binge of GOT7 content. This happened a few weeks during May 2020. I was watching a video of GOT7 bowling in Toronto and the venue looked familiar, because I'd been there before. (Link)
Cooking
- I had this scallion pancake recipe saved up from a while ago. It'll be a while until I actually try it though lmao. (Link)
- It was bothering me that I didn't know how long to cook asparagus before it went soggy. (Link)
Crafts
- I finally did my first cross stitch. I checked out this guide before I did, but it ended up being super easy. I don't think I really needed much instruction besides what was already included in the kit. (Link)
- I did some colouring and I needed help with choosing colour palettes. I didn't end up using this advice though and just went with random colours though ^^;; (Link)
Video Games
- I got curious about how villagers kick out and recruit animal friends to their island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons lol. I don't have a Switch and have only played the AC mobile game, but the fact that my non-gamer friend bought a Switch Lite to play AC:NH made me realize that this game has really taken the world by storm. (Link)
- I'm not a big fan of hack and slash games, but when Hyrule Warriors promoted its My Fairy feature, I was half considering buying the game just so I could collect cute fairies and dress them up X'D I don't think I'll buy the game, but man, I wish other games also had cute features like this! (Link
Reading & Writing
- I was linked this website to download ebooks, which is very helpful. (Link)
- I was working on a fic that had quite a few sex scenes. I actually don't like writing sex scenes so I had to look for advice. (Link)
- I needed help with lie vs. lay lmao. This chart helped me. (Link
Chinese History
- I watched a documentary video on Youtube about Wu Zetian. It was pretty interesting. (Link)
- After watching the documentary, one of the people I looked up was Shangguan Wan'er, who was supposedly a female prime minister during Wu Zetian's reign. (Link)
- The other topic I looked up was Songyue Pagoda. What's impressive about this pagoda was that it was constructed so long ago in 523 AD. (Link)
- I read about the concept of Wen and Wu emperors as a basis for establishing Chinese dynasties. (Link)
- I watched SCI Mystery a few weeks ago. I learned that the SCI Mystery webnovel was actually a fanfiction of the author's own fanfiction of a Baogong novel called The Seven Heroes and Five Gallants. Now it makes sense why the webnovel is rather tropey. Plus, now that I know that SCI Mystery is based on pre-existing literature, I feel like I can be an obsessive fangirl and read more into the characters. (Link)
- My mom was watching Serenade of Peaceful Joy and told me about Fan Zhongyan, whose well known saying was "Be the first to bear the world's hardship, and the last to enjoy its comfort" (先天下之憂而憂,後天下之樂而樂). I told her about how the show was being universally panned though so I think she won't continue watching. (Link)
- I was watching Legend of Mi Yue before I decided to drop it because the writing was too draggy. Anyway, I found an article that talked about the historical accuracy within the show. (Link)
Chinese Entertainment
- My parents were relaxing on the couch with the TV on and I saw Jackson Wang, which was unexpected because this was a Cantonese channel playing mostly Cantonese programs. I did some digging, and this was a game show hosted by Carol Cheng and FAMA (the rap duo) called Do Did Eat. It wasn't a great show because it was a game show, travel show, and trivia show in one and it moved too slow. (Link)
- I read an article about actors in Chinese dramas who had a tough time landing jobs. It was pretty interesting because I recognized several of the actors named in the article. (Link)
- I watched an interview with Gao Hanyu and Ji Xiaobing who were the main leads for SCI Mystery. Apparently they were both in a drama years before but didn't know it until much later. I had to look up what drama this was. (Link)
- Here was a Tongyao derivative fanvideo that I watched. I'm always a ho for derivative fanvideos with guzhuang :P (Link)
- I was looking up some Chinese internet lingo. Apparently "fanchameng" means when it's cute that someone's appearance doesn't match their personality. (Link)
- I became obsessed with Ji Xiaobing after watching SCI Mystery, so I've been looking him up lmao. Here's an article with lots of good shots of him from his various dramas. (Link)
- I couldn't resist looking up some Ji Xiaobing/Zhu Yilong fanvideos. They really do make an attractive duo...Anyway, here's a fanvideo featuring them in guzhuang :3 (Link)
- Here's another Ji Xiaobing/Zhu Yilong fanvideo, both with clips from their guzhuang and contemporary dramas. (Link)
- And another one. I seriously can't get enough of this 老幹部 duo. (Link)
- As mentioned above, I was watching Legend of Mi Yue, and found an article that covered some of the reasons why this drama wasn't too popular. I agree with some of the points, such as how the women were portrayed in the show. (Link)
- I found a 16-part TongYao derivative series on Bilibili. Basically, the creator cut together a bunch of scenes from SCI Mystery and others to create a whole other story. It sort of got a bit messy towards the end (i.e. some actions and clips didn't really match the dialogue very well), but I still applaud the creator for putting together 2 hours worth of story. (Link)
- I learned that there is actual name for the friend group of Guo Jingfei, Li Guangjie, and Lei Jiayin. They call themselves the TF Old Boys, which is pretty cute XD (Link)
Korean Entertainment
- As implied above, GOT7 is really the only Kpop group that I listen to. GOT7's leader, Jaebeom, produces music on Soundcloud under the name defsoul and his music is really good. (Link)
- While was on a GOT7 binge, I found a few websites that sold both official and unofficial Kpop merchandise. I only bookmarked one link though. (Link)
- I also found some fanmade enamel pins for GOT7 that looked pretty nice. (Jus2 pins 1) (Jus2 pins 2) (GOT7 pins 1) (GOT7 pins 2)
- I was watching a DKDKTV interview with a woman who'd defected from North Korea. She was really chill about the fact that she DEFECTED. Here's the interview, which I found interesting. (Link)
- And this was her Youtube channel. (Link)
- One of the hosts of DKDKTV did a lecture at a Korean university about cultural appropriation. I was a little skeptical about the lecture until I got to the end, at which point I understood what the guy was getting at. (Link)
Miscellaneous
- I saw this website called Zooniverse being talked about on Tumblr. Basically it's a website where you can volunteer your time to do some tedious work for studies and such (stuff like data entry, transcription, etc.). I haven't actually tried it, but the concept is cool. (Link)
- I read a BBC article about some heroines during WW2. (Link)
