Cool Stuff I Saw - August 2020
Here's some cool stuff for the month. I'm considering stopping my roundup posts on Tumblr. But I'm still thinking about it.
Current Events
- Some donation links for the Lebanon explosion. (Link)
- For the first time I heard of the term "food sovereignty." It basically means giving the control of supply to those who actually make food, as opposed to corporations who control food production. (Link)
- I read an article on the experiences of Africans in Hong Kong. It very much makes me sad that these people are being discriminated against. For me, Hong Kong is a place where I fit in, but I have to remember that doesn't accept all. (Link)
- I watched the video of Uncle Roger watching BBC cook rice. It surprised me a bit because there hasn't been any Youtube comedians that have filled that hole ever since the Asians of early Youtube left (Ryan Higa, Kevjumba, etc.). While watching the video, I was kind of more focused on whether Uncle Roger propagated any negative stereotypes. But this article was concerned with whether "ethnic" dishes being appropriated. (Link)
- An article I read about how a good math education helps people think more reasonably, which I agree with. (Link)
Life
- I was doing some research on pets. I don't intend to have a pet any time soon. I was just curious. Here are some posts about cats. (Link 1) (Link 2) (Link 3) (Link 4)
- I'm trying to improve my flexibility, so I was looking up stretches, but I also needed pictures lol. (Link 1) (Link 2)
- Some ebook resources. (Link)
- I learned about the term "limerence." (Link)
Internet
- A no-longer-active Tumblr blog with colour palettes based on nature. (Link)
Western History
- I read about a VERY creepy book exploring the relationships between homoeroticism and cannabalism of slaves in the US. I read the Wikipedia summary but I don't know if I'd be brave enough to read the actual book. In any case, it's very disturbing. (Link)
- I looked up the "princes of hell." (Link)
Chinese History
- I was doing some research in the surname "Xiong" (meaning bear). (Link 1) (Link 2)
- I'd watched a short Cdrama called the Warring States Period, and they mentioned four prominent politicians during that period so I did a bi of research. (Link)
- I've been watching the Cdrama Ming Dynasty and of course I had to look up the Jinyiwei (Embroidered Uniform Guard). I know there were movies made about them but I didn't know much else about them. (Link)
- I came across a post about Chinese ghost marriages. (Link)
Japanese History
- I read a Twitter thread on how Japanese people may discriminate against Koreans/Chinese people using surname Kanji. (Link)
Gaming
- I watched some interesting videos on Warhammer factions, so I was reading into the game for part of the month. (Link)
- A Tumblr blog with Fire Emblem character sorters/rankers. (Link)
Sports
- I read an article about Jurgen Klopp's life before football greatness. (Link
- The Raptors Playoff introductions done by players' families :) (Link)
Chinese entertainment
- A prominent Danmei writer released a statement about why she's not going to be on the internet. It was translated into English. Honestly, good for her. Chinese fandom is toxic af, and it's leaking into the English language side of Chinese media fandom too. (Link)
- I was curious about the actor who played Xiaosi in Farewell My Concubine, as I hadn't really seen him in anything else. Turns out he only acts in dramas every few years, and being in a movie was a one-off for him. (Link)
- Here's an interview between Tang Wei and Leehom Wang for their movie Black Hat, which I heard was unfortunately pretty bad. I think Leehom wanted to tease Tang Wei throughout the interview lol. (Link)
- Here's a solo interview from Tang Wei in English for Black Hat. She seemed a lot more comfortable here than in another English panel interview I saw. And also she's very cute here :3 (Link)
- I found out the author of the Rise of Phoenixes is also the author of Legend of Fuyao. (Link)
- The screenwriter for the Rise of Phoenixes is also an author, which is cool. (Link)
- I looked up the actor who plays Sun Ruowei's dad in Ming Dynasty and Zhao Yuan in the Rise of Phoenixes. (Link)
- I looked up the actor who played the tenth prince Ning Ji in the Rise of Phoenixes. He was pretty cute :3 (Link)
- Some pictures of Ni Ni's costumes from the Rise of Phoenixes. (Link)
- A fanartist on Twitter (NSFW). (Link)
- A post explaining the novel ending of the Rise of Phoenixes. (Link)
- I guess this technically also belongs in Chinese history. Anyway, Gaixiage is supposed to be the name of the tune from the Beijing opera "Farewell My Concubine." I'd heard it in the movie Farewell My Concubine. Lay Zhang has also featured it in some of his videos, and he was actually singing it in his Only 3 days video. I finally learned the name of the opera from his interview lol. (Link 1) (Link 2)
- And here is said Only 3 Days interview for Lay Zhang. (Link)
- Apparently Kris Wu and Lu Han released a single together, which is surprising. (Link)
- Here's an interview Tao gave about his life while with SM Entertainment and EXO. (Link)
- I was listening to Lay's album Lit and some of the songs are really nice. In Soul, some of the commenters on Youtube said that one of the background vocals was saying the Thousand Character Classic. I can't seem to locate the part when the background vocals do that. But I still read up on the Thousand Character Classic. (Link 1) (Link 2)
- Article on Lay Zhang's success. (Link)
- Interview with Tang Wei & Lay Zhang for Ming Dynasty. I love Tang Wei so much <3 (Link)
Korean Entertainment
- I got roped back into Kpop this month, not because of GOT7 this time, but because of Exo. Now I finally know who's in this reaction gif XD (Link)
- Apparently Chanyeol is a property owner so he's raking in money. (Link)
- A post explaining why Lay can't promote with Exo. The layout of this website is a mess though, so beware. (Link)
- Apparently Lay was in Korea to see Kyungsoo off when he enlisted, which was surprising in a great way. Lay essentially hasn't promoted with Exo since 2017. (Link)
