Review: Crime Story (重案組) (1993)

So…just the usual Jackie Chan hero fantasy movie. I appreciate the interesting action but the story is too cringe for me to watch without having one eye closed tbh.

Spoilers.

Story

The story surrounded the kidnapping of a rich real estate mogul (which I later found was based on a real case). He was kidnapped for ransom by a ring that included corrupted cops and other folks working together across Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Shenzhen. One such corrupt cop was Hung Ting-bong.

Eddie Chan was the main character played by Jackie Chan who as always went above and beyond for his job. The businessman Wong Yat-fei was in contact with him, and called him when he and his wife were kidnapped. The wife was later dumped into the water but she was found alive. This was on purpose so that the kidnappers would have someone to get the ransom from.

Hung Ting-bong was one of the head officers put on the case and Eddie was working with him. Of course, Hung Ting-bong tried to obstruct justice, and encouraged Eddie to relax when investigating, to which Eddie obviously declined. Eventually, Eddie caught on to Hung Ting-bong’s suspicious behaviour and deduced that he was purposely obstructing justice.

Eventually, Eddie and the police tracked down Wong Yat-fei and he and his wife left Hong Kong.

Very simple and straightforward, but I absolutely cannot handle Jackie Chan’s preaching and lecturing that he does in every single movie.

Production

I wished I wasn’t so distracted by the story line because I can appreciate that Jackie Chan’s action scenes tend to make good use of the surroundings which I admire.

Characters

Eddie Chan was Jackie Chan in every single movie. He only focused on getting to the bottom of the case, not caring about the level of damage he did. But he always had to stop to show people how good of a person he was. I rolled my eyes at the part towards the end where he was escorting Hung Ting-bong out, only to literally find a child in a burning building whose mom was somehow not with him but was at the foot of the building? There was also the part in the beginning during the employee revolts where Eddie tried to stop the cops from fighting against the labourers. I’m sorry but I just can’t handle how he always has to create situations to make himself look like the sincerest person ever.

On the flip side, Hung Ting-bong had to become the complete opposite of Eddie, who didn’t care for morals and his position as a police officer, he just wanted to take what he could get as part of the underground. To be honest his role didn’t really make that much sense to me. Not in the sense that he was a double agent, but that as someone who was that high up in the police hierarchy, that he didn’t understand Eddie at all. That’s complete bullshit. He doesn’t get that high up without being able to read guys like him.

Wong Yat-fei was the victim, a businessman in construction who was cutthroat with his money, which led to labourers being upset with him withholding wages. He got paranoid about being kidnapped because it’d happened to him before. But this time it was real too. He was eventually found, but he and his wife decided to leave Hong Kong.

Overall

Straightforward movie. Try to ignore the story, especially if you don’t like fake heroism movies.
