Neon Genesis Evangelion wasn’t as great as it was hyped to be, and that may just have been because I was not the target demographic for the show. The concept of struggling to be a warrior is one I have watched many times and seeing Shinji work through it didn’t particularly unlock any new ideas for me. The anime tropes bogged down the first 2/3 of this show and in fact I was thinking of dropping this show around half way through. I had heard about the ending being confusing and I can see why that was. I also felt this show likely had budget constraints as there was a lot of lazy animation/editing that bothered me. I understand there’s a wider universe surrounding the series but at this point I am not interested in exploring the universe beyond the anime to understand what went on.
I can understand that this might have been a pioneering show at the time with certain themes that might not have been explored but I didn’t feel that this story was particularly purposeful about it and had just lucked into that. Would I recommend this show? Not really. Not unless I knew someone was already interested in mecha.
