I was obsessed with Fushigi Yuugi when I was a teenager, but I hadn’t actually watched it (didn’t know how to find anime). Over ten years later, I am finally getting around to this anime. It was a solid shoujo/fantasy anime, in the sense that seemed to hit all of the tropes that one would want and expect of this genre. There were times when the tropes were too much for me, but nonetheless the overarching story was compelling enough to keep me watching. I would recommend this as an easy watch, a slower paced adventure anime with heavy romantic story lines.

This anime was fun. It was a typical shonen anime, but it didn't fall back on gags and shonen tropes as much as I would have expected, which is nice. It did however suffer some of the issues that we see in anime adaptations of longer manga series that haven't been completed yet.

I've decided to drop this show, mostly because there's nothing going on for me to want to keep watching.

It was difficult for me to stay engaged with the show at the beginning, and the story telling overall just isn't engaging or well-paced enough for me. I felt that the characters I liked didn't have much screen time, which was also a little disheartening.

It's unfortunate because I was hoping to enjoy this anime from my teenage years. I do actually think that if I'd watched as a teenager, I might have still enjoyed it, because the main characters are a little teenage-like. However, as an adult, I couldn't take several of the characters seriously.

Spoilers up to Episode 24.

I won't lie, I came into this anime expecting something on par with Cowboy Bebop in terms of quality. These two series were associated as they had the same director.

However, Samurai Champloo was definitely a step below Cowboy Bebop. It was a fun anime, but I think there were two things that prevented me from enjoying it as much as Cowboy Bebop.

First, Samurai Champloo was set in an alternate Edo period. As somebody who is not well-versed in historical Japanese settings, I think that I probably missed a lot of the anachronisms and quirky things that would've stood out from a typical Edo-period story.

Second, Samurai Champloo was a relatively tame story in that it still erred on the side of moral caution. Our main characters did have questionable characters, but ultimately, it ended up being a happy, feel-good story. I didn't find myself interested in the characters because they were predictable and not particularly fleshed out.

So the reasons that I didn't enjoy Samurai Champloo was that I didn't think the writing was as compelling, and also because I wasn't from a background that could fully enjoy the stylistic aspects of this show.

Wow. Okay. Cowboy Bebop definitely lived up to the hype. This show was perfectly balanced in every regard.

The tone of the show was generally light and comedic, but there was an underlying story line that was serious and emotional. The distinctive music and aesthetic style were unique, and the show generally stayed away from most anime tropes, which made it very accessible to a general audience of both anime and non-anime fans.

I would highly recommend this anime for anyone looking for a fun and short science fiction-comedy serious.

Spoilers. Also, I kind of rushed this review, so there might be stuff that I've missed, but this is all I managed to get out in two hours on a weeknight X'D

I'd heard about this anime years ago, when I was still in university. While the general time leaping and time travel story line was interesting, the anime tropes did get annoying at times. Overall, I thought this show was okay, but I probably wouldn't recommend it unless it was to a person who didn't mind anime tropes.

I watched Steins;Gate here on Youtube.
