Review: Hunter Killer (2018)

This movie wasn't even dumb fun. It was just boring. I'd probably watch this if I was purposely looking for something to nitpick and poke fun at. But this was not a good movie with tons of propaganda.

Spoilers.

Story

The gist of the story is as follows. I don't know all of the technical military/naval terms so bear with me.

Glass led a submarine to investigate an American submarine that was taken down near Russia. During the movie, it's deduced by the Americans that the Russian Minister of Defence was running a coup. Beaman, a SEAL, was tasked with saving the Russian president, while Glass would defend against Russian attacks and help Beaman's team to escape.

This movie was so boring I don't even remember half of the things that happened. The story was generic, but plenty of generic stories can be written in an interesting way. I don't even remember how Beaman got his team member back to safety because I was so checked out after like the first half hour.

This movie was obviously American military propaganda where the Americans were the good guys helping out the problematic Russia.

Production

This movie was made in 2018. By that time, I would've thought the movie industry was past having non-English-speaking characters speaking English to one another. For so much of the movie, Russian characters were speaking English to one another with Russian accents. Actually some of them barely had an accent so it just sounded like a normal American speaking (I'm talking about the "Russian" president here).

This movie did not need to be 2 hours long. 1.5 hours would've sufficed. In addition, it wasn't even a good-looking movie. Most of the movie was spent underwater in submarines without much to look at. So the visuals wouldn't be a good reason to extend this movie.

Characters

Glass was a stereotypical tough leader who was also a bit of a rebel, making bold decisions that were questionably against orders.

Beaman was also kind of a renegade, making crude jokes and looking cool.

Donnegan was the typical mean boss who realized that Glass did the right thing in the end.

Those were the only characters worth speaking about and they weren't even well written. Everybody was a stereotype, literally cut out from a stencil that's been used hundreds of times.

Overall

You can tell how bored I was with this movie because of how short this review was. I couldn't pay attention long enough to even notice all of the things that were poorly done.

The only value this movie has is probably going back and pointing out all the terrible things with it. Otherwise, don't waste your time with this one.
