Review: Busted Season 2 (범인은 바로 너! 2) (2019)

Yet another incredibly entertaining season of puzzles and mysteries! I very much enjoyed this season and will be looking forward to the third and final season.

Spoilers.

Writing

Like last season, this season had an overarching story. It started with the murder of K, whom we knew from the last season, and bled into the overarching story regarding the Flower Killer.
After a couple of episodes, Lee Kwangsoo left the story, and Lee Seunggi replaced him on the detective team. Kwangsoo had stolen a USB and then dashed while saying that he couldn't explain his reasons yet. That USB ended up showing itself at the very end, which I guess sets up th story for the next season.

Admittedly I was VERY surprised by the reveal that Lee Seunggi was the killer. It was so chilling, especially since he flipped the switch and started to ACT instead of just being his normal self.

One thing that surprises me about this show is the willingness for the producers to let the detectives fail sometimes. This happened in the last season but I didn't notice it as much until this season. Sometimes, the detectives will be unable to save somebody (like in the last episode), or they may let a culprit get away, and the writers have planned for when that happens. It's very immersive and I really appreciate it.

Format

Like in last season, there really wasn't much of a format to the story. There were a lot more puzzles than actual logic deductioning but that was fine, that's just how it is with this show. There was variety as to whether the challenges were individual vs teamwork-based, and I liked that. We like variety in a variety show!

Production

We knew this from the last season, but the production value was very high. In addition to the variety of fancy settings, this season, we had a lot more recurring actors, which helped to build the overarching story even further. Another thing that I started to notice often was the clothes! I loved seeing what outfits our detectives were dressed in episode, and deciding whether they were appropriate for sleuthing and getting down and dirty.

Episodes

Since I was used to the format, there was nothing that was unsurprising or uncomfortable. Of course, there were episodes that I preferred more than others, but nothing stood out as a recurring problem.

Like in the last season with the Genius Detective group, I did think that the episode with IZ*ONE was a little overwhelming because there were so many guests and I didn't know all of them. It helped if the detectives talked more to the girls they were partnered up with, like how Jaesuk told Sakura that he wanted her to talk more (which I thought was very nice and welcoming for Sakura).

The Genius Detective Team did make an appearance this season, and admittedly I still have not had their faces and names memorized ^^;; It's mostly because they work as a collective so it's difficult for me to remember if each of them have specific traits. Maybe next time they come, it would be nice if the costume department gave them outfits that stood out a bit more so I could recognize them better ^^;;

Cast

We only had Kwangsoo for two episodes, so after he left, Jongmin was really the only guy who was pure comedic relief. While Seunggi was funny, he had more of a grounded funniness like the other guys did. Not that I think that Kwangsoo was trash, Seunggi's presence just created a different atmosphere that was still enjoyable.

Clearly Seunggi won't be an ally moving forward, so I wonder if Kwangsoo will be coming back, considering we saw his stolen USB at the very end of the show.

Overall

Another incredibly fun season! Fun people, great quality of production. I am extremely hyped for the final season!
