Review: Busted Season 3 (범인은 바로 너! 3) (2021)
Ahh yet another season of very entertaining detective shenanigans, if we can call it that. I read that this was supposed to be the last season, but the ending definitely left room for a new season, so we shall see!
Spoilers.
Writing
The quality of writing was more or less the same as in previous seasons. There was one main overarching story line, which in this season was Hwalbindang, an organization that aimed to punish criminals and potential criminals alike.
In the last season, the plot twist was that Lee Seunggi was the flower killer, so I really expected this show to make Minyoung the godmother of Hwalbindang. Up until the very end, I was still suspicious of whether she was, even when Soohyang revealed herself as the villain. In any case, I thought it was nice that Minyoung was not a criminal, and that she was still a dedicated part of the team X3
Seunggi escaped death and then later shot Soohyang. I think it made sense logistically not to kill his character, because he's been a good cast member, and keeping him alive allows him to come back in future seasons.
And at the very end, we saw another woman sending out an email, presumably related to Hwanbindang, which suggests that the organization is not done. I wasn't sure if the woman was Hyeyoon, because the lighting was kind of dark. But yeah, this was basically the scene that kept the show open for a new season, though it won't be likely in the near future.
Format
The format was pretty similar to past seasons, I can't say too much about it as each episode was different individually. Of course, some episodes were more entertaining than others, but by and large, I think that the lack of a strict episode structure made it way more flexible for the writers to be creative.
Production
The production quality for this show has always been really good. The props keep getting grander and grander. I frankly don't know if it's really expensive to make the clues that they make, or if they purposely make the answers to fit the clues. For example, in the last episode, there was that painting on the floor in the club of the abandoned resort...I feel like it would have been more reasonable to just put Soohyang on the third floor instead of commissioning a piece of artwork that will imply the third floor. In any case, this isn't that distracting, just me being curious about how this show manages its finances lol.
I don't remember if I mentioned this in previous write ups, but I also kind of love the costuming. I love seeing what our cast members decide to wear in every episode, and I love thinking about how practical they'd be for a real life detective haha.
Episodes
Like I said, not too much can be really said about the episodes, as they're mostly individual standalone mysteries, though each will have one clue relating to Hwalbindang.
Cast
This season completely removed Ahn Jaewook and Lee Seunggi became a full time cast members. Like with last season, I didn't feel that the show necessarily suffered because one regular was missing. Instead, I think the group found a new dynamic. Seunggi isn't a full fledged comedic relief guy, but he has enough laughs to make him popular.
I love that each of the cast members has a good relationship with the others, and I think the time spent in the cars is a really good way of showing what our detectives are thinking, whether related directly to the case or not.
Overall
I'm very much going to miss this show. It gave me lots of laughs. It didn't make me think too hard, but it wasn't totally mindless either. The cast of characters is so likable and so fun. Highly recommend!
