Review: Creation of the Gods Training Camp (封神訓練營) (2023)

This is a show for the fans of the Creation of the Gods movie series. It wasn’t the best from a production standpoint but the star here is the actual clips of the training camp.

Format

The studio had taken recordings from the training camp and edited them. In the first six episodes, the cast members would watch them together and then comment on them. Then, the hosts would prepare some questions and games.

This is not an uncommon format for a variety show. I used to think it was kind of lazy but now I see the entertainment value of it. It’s related to the genre of “reaction videos,” in which we get an added layer of commentary to the already humerous editing.

Production

In terms of the visual quality, it was fine. The editors could only make do with the footage that they had. Most of the footage was good quality. There was some blurriness but it didn’t impede my enjoyment value. Variety show editors are also usually pretty good with adding funny memes and reaction words for comedic value.

My issue with production was all in the sound quality. At many times throughout the series, there were two music tracks playing. My guess is that the original music track was copyrighted, so it was covered with another music track. But why would there be an original music track if they were just at camp? There was also one part in which the audio of the cast in studio was completely muted. So overall just terrible audio choices made.

Episodes

I thought the content provided from the camp was very interesting. There were tough times, there were funny times, there were happy times, and I appreciated that we saw different parts of it. The show did however focus on the positives and so we didn’t really see the gruelling elimination process, we only ever saw those who had made it into roles. Not that I think that’s a bad thing. I think it’s better this way.

While some of these actors have filmed other shows and movies since Creation of the Gods, most of them have not been big household names so they’re not exactly variety mainstays, and relied on the hosts as well as the games for some more funnies. But overall they were a fun bunch and were able to drive entertaining conversation. And because they aren’t variety mainstays, they felt a little more real. They were varied in personality (like Wuershan said with how he cast the actors). We had more rambunctious guys but also the quieter ones. Part of the appeal of variety shows is that these are real people doing real things, so that range of personalities did bring that atmosphere.

Overall

Definitely recommend this show for those who love the movie! It was clumsily put together but I forgave it because I cared more about seeing the training camp clips.
