Review: No Math School Trip (수학 없는 수학여행) (2023)

This was an alright show. Like many variety shows, it’s more enjoyable if there are celebrities that you already know and like. I think the chemistry of the cast members was overall alright but in terms of the games there wasn’t really anything that special.

Format

The format of this show was nothing new. The cast members went to Hokkaido and along the way, they played games. A lot of the games were also very familiar and nothing new. You had a lot of simple games, guessing games, and often the stakes were food or their choice of room.

There was one game with taking photos that I felt took advantage of the scenery a bit more, but otherwise there wasn’t anything special about the games.

Production

It was fine. There’s a certain standard of production to kvariety shows and this show met that, but again, the style of it was very predictable and familiar.

Content

Among the cast members there were two older and the rest were younger. There was immediately more familiarity among the younger cast, but I felt that Lee Yongjin and Yang Sechan, the older cast members, were probably experienced in variety and figured out ways to mesh with the younger cast. A lot of it involved being the butt of jokes but I think they seemed to have it under control. I did feel that they sincerely wanted to understand the younger members and be able to communicate with them well. It was revealed throughout the show that the six of the guys would stay up late at night just chatting even after filming was done, so I think it showed how comfortable they learned to get with one another.

Overall

This could have been a very boring variety show as the format of it was very similar to your run of the mill kvariety show, but the show managed to gather a group of people who meshed well enough with one another that it was still nice to watch.
