Review: Planet Earth: A Celebration (2020)

This was a very typical BBC David Attenborough documentary. It was nice, but I wouldn’t say it was particularly special.

Narrative and Format

The story behind the creation of this documentary was that the world stopped for the pandemic, and this documentary would remind us of the beauty of the world. This theme was extremely loose though, as the wildlife documentary part of the movie didn’t follow any particular theme. Most of the scenes were related to animals finding food, protecting their family, etc. But there didn’t seem to be a strong theme connecting them despite the intention for this documentary to be bookended by comments on the pandemic.

Production

The music was supposed to be a selling point of this documentary, with there being a collaboration between Hans Zimmer and Dave. There were shot interviews with both artists at the end. But again it was hard to relate that back to nature.

Content

As always, the footage was excellent. With this documentary having been released in 2020, it’s a lot newer than the older BBC wildlife documentaries, and we can see the quality in the camerawork having grown.

Overall

Good documentary, but I’d say it was more like a good set of wildlife shots, as I couldn’t sense a strong theme between the chosen settings and scenarios.
