Review: Street Dance of China Season 4 (這!就是街舞 第四季) (2021)
This show was pretty enjoyable for the most part. I do have some grievances, mostly in the last episode. But for the most part, it was very entertaining, as someone who had not watched the previous seasons. So I would recommend this show up to episode 11 XD
Spoilers.
Format
I didn't have a huge issue with the show's formatting. Each round was different. The challenges were different, and the methods of elimination were different. Sometimes the eliminations were based on results, sometimes they were decided on by the captains.
I appreciated that this show did not start eliminating people right off the bat. The first two episodes were more of a showcase. The first elimination round eliminated about half of the contestants. For the contestants who moved on, I think we got a good number of episodes to get to know most of them.
I have an issue with the towel voting system. It looks so insecure. What if you throw a towel and it doesn't land on the stage? Also, towel counting is a task that just seems very prone to error.
The other thing that bothered me was the lack of clarity with the towel voting. The criteria for all of the voting was simply whether the voters liked the performance or not. That bothered me. Now, I know that in real life, art has value as long as it can move somebody. So in real life, this sort of voting, based on whether or not somebody liked a performance, would be a reliable indicator of its popularity. But this is supposed to be a competition show. Competitions are supposed to have criteria. I felt that the show should've given a criteria to the audience to judge the performances. I felt like different people were being judged for different criteria.
Production
The episode length is probably one of the most notable yikes points about this show. Each episode is approximately 3 hours, sometimes more. I understand that the episodes are truly that long sometimes, unfortunately. I just wonder if there would be another way of formatting the show, maybe even just chopping up the videos in half.
One of the reasons I was hesitant to watch this show was because I am very wary of competition shows. I hate the artificial drama. And I was surprised by the lack of artificial drama for most of this show. In fact, the show emphasized an atmosphere of friendship and mutual respect. There were funnies during the show, and it succeeded in endearing these dancers to me.
However, I felt that the decision to broadcast the last episode live was a bad idea. There was a lot of awkward time, and I was fast-forwarding A LOT. I really wish that it had simply been edited for proper TV viewing.
Other
I had so much fun with this show, and honestly, it was only the final episode that brought my mood down. The voting results didn't make sense, and it disillusioned me so much that I stopped paying attention in the battle section (especially because I had suspicions on who was the winner based on spoilers I'd accidentally seen).
I'm still kind of emotional about this show, so I can't really tell how much of my disillusionment is with the mishandling of the show, and how much of it is simply the fact that I wasn't happy with the winner. That being said, I do feel I am justified in being disappointed with Ye Yin as the winner considering the rest of the contestants on the show.
Overall
This season was great up until episode 11. I would sincerely only recommend the show only up until then.
